Re-Architecting My Digital Life

I find myself rethinking a few things these days around the technology I use to manage and move my life. I’ve noticed that this requires me to stretch slightly outside of my familiar zone, in order for me to make a well-thought-out decision when it comes to the my digital gadgets. I’m taking a serious look at a few of the hardware and software tools I am using to create and manage – practically everything. I’d like to get it right… things that keep me focused and efficient are important to me.

As a CEO, Board Member, Father, Music Lover, Community Member, Picture Taker, Athlete and Writer, I need the technology I use to bring all facets of my life together into a single channel. I can’t be switching back and forth between computers, phones, and operating systems just to honor the ‘original’ solutions I started with years ago. I need there to be a separation between the hardware and the software I use, so that whatever device I’m on, I can access whatever content I need, whenever I need it.

Call it recalibrating, I’m ignoring brand image and I’m opting for convenience. I want fluidity, mobility, stability and ease…I simply can’t stand when I’m bridging technology…or its not working well for me.

I’m trying to keep an open mind, but some of the technology I have, like our AppleTV, and some of my ‘preferences’, such as to use the cloud whenever possible, won’t be changing anytime soon. But some of my technology is under the microscope, such as: my tablet, photo management and presentation software, movies and phone. As I say, I’m trying to keep an open mind, but I’m not throwing out all the stuff that’s working well for me today.

As this personal technology assessment takes place, I’ll share my ‘architectural design’ with you. I’ll let you know the tools I’m choosing to keep me light and fast, agile and connected…cool and in touch. I won’t profess to have all the right answers, and I promise not to become too preachy and all, like the “I’m so smart” kind of person. I’ll just share what’s working for me, and what doesn’t seem to be my best option.

Ultimately, I’m looking to enjoy the technology I use, and feel better off for using it. The next few articles will explore my digital evolution and what technologies I evaluated in order to increase efficiency.

Stay tuned for my upcoming technology reviews.
