Seasons, Costumes and Being a Kid

One of the great things about living in Calgary is that our climate offers us four full seasons. Since mid-September, the leaves and grasses have been turning and the mountains have been unbelievably beautiful. We’ve had a wonderful fall, and happily, Calgary made it to Halloween with only one snow day before November.

Halloween is a big time in our house. I love wearing costumes and I share that passion with my kids, friends and work. Each year I suffer some early stress over what I should go as, and then there’s the cost and effort of pulling my costume together. But every year, once the plan and pieces are in place, I dive in and indulge in the whole Halloween experience. This year, I was able to dress up for 4 events.

I’m not sure what it is that I like so much about wearing a costume, but I suspect it’s the opportunity to re-join a childish time. There is something innocently playful and fun about dressing up. I think at the end of the day, you just can’t take yourself too seriously when you’re wearing a Halloween costume. Maybe that’s it – wearing a costume is a humbling reminder that we’re all kids inside. Play is healthy and laughing at yourself is good medicine.

It was a great fall this year…and a great Halloween.
