The Canadian Olympic Men’s hockey team will take to the ice at 5:00 am Mountain Standard Time, Sunday February 23rd in the Gold medal game. As I’ve been asking around, I’m concerned to see that some people don’t plan to wake early and watch this game. I offer 3 reasons – three perspectives really – to contemplate, perhaps as motivation to reconsider. My hope is that at least one person will read this, and change their mind.
1) Gold Doesn’t Grow on Trees
With the NHL strongly considering not allowing their players to play in the Olympics anymore, this could be the last gold medal us Canadian’s witness in the long time. I mean, Canada could field 10 full Olympic teams of NHL players (could you imagine…Canada 1, Canada 2, Canada 3…just like the bobsled!)…but if playing in the NHL means you can’t play the Olympics…hell, I might have to get into better shape, just so Canada can field a team. Said differently, Gold medals don’t grow on trees – this is a huge event for Canada.
2) Positive Energy
Call me a hippy, call me a new-age weirdo, I don’t care…I truly believe there is something to ‘cheering for your team’. There is a positive energy, a focused will, that helps the players. There is something that ‘home field advantage’ provides. If you’re a fan – if you truly hope that Canada wins this game – then do your part. Wake up and cheer for the team.
3) Community and Life Memories
The good times we spend with our friends, family and community are often marked by an event. We remember the people, the emotions and the details when we are present during a great event. The day your child was born, the day you graduated…the day Canada wins Gold in the Olympics. I see an opportunity here – to wake up and watch with your children, to gather together family and neighbors, to hit a bar with the boys…to connect with your community and be a part of a great Canadian event.
This game isn’t life or death – I want to keep things in perspective here. If you’re not a fan, have other responsibilities or would prefer to make other decisions…than certainly do so. But for those who are on the fence, not sure whether to set that early Sunday morning alarm…I hope you’ll reconsider.
Don’t under estimate your importance in this game. I hope you’ll watch, cheer … and be a part of it.
