I’m not an outwardly political person. Putting a lawn sign up in my yard is an ‘aggressive political move’ for me, as it publicly expresses something I usually keep private. I’m often pretty quiet during an election process, but I feel compelled to write this character reference for Greg Clark, the Leader of the Alberta Party who is running in the Calgary Elbow by-election.
I know Greg personally, having grown up with him (since we were 5), worked with him (at 3 separate companies), played on sports teams with him and hung out with him at parties, cabins, golf courses and social events. I know his family well. I think it makes sense to put capable people into political office so I’m speaking up.
For clarity, I don’t personally know any of the other candidates running in the election, so this isn’t a comparison or ‘vote for the best’ recommendation. I simply know a great deal about Greg Clark’s abilities, character and integrity, and feel these qualities are worth sharing with those who may be putting considered thought into their choice of candidate (vs. simply voting for party colors).
Greg Clark offers us Albertans the kind of skills and personal character that I believe the next generation of politicians must bring to office. He is highly intelligent, a gifted communicator, a passionate problem solver and an honest person.
Anyone’s who’s met Greg, knows he’s intelligent, as he’s always highly informed about issues, and the facts surrounding them. His memory for details is impressive, and he’s able to deconstruct complicated matters and identify the core of issues. Greg comes from an information management background, having worked extensively in the energy industry helping companies organize their information. He is well versed in how businesses make decisions, in operational process flow and in designing enterprise solutions. Success in this field requires the ability to see the big picture while being able to implement solutions at the ground level. Greg’s made his mark on this industry, and is highly respected in the field. These are transferable skills, and ones that are necessary in Alberta’s government these days…we don’t just need to change a few people, there are deeper problems within our system.
Greg is a strong communicator…and that doesn’t just mean ‘a good talker’. He’s an engaged listener, and has the ability to speak his mind. I always enjoy speaking with Greg because you’ll feel both heard, as well as know what he thinks. He’s a capable public speaker, a gifted writer and has the charisma of a strong leader. These are important traits as change doesn’t happen through citing facts and figures…people need to ‘see’ the vision and feel inspired to do the work to achieve it. Greg has the ability to lead change as well as sustain that which is working.
Greg is a passionate person. When problems present themselves, Greg’s response is ‘this can be fixed’. His positive attitude is matched by his commitment to do what he says he will. He’s always ‘up’ and he has the energy to take on complex challenges.
Lastly, Greg’s most valuable traits are his honesty and integrity. I trust him and know that regardless of whether we are aligned on every political matter or not, he will work tirelessly to pursue the best options and solutions he can find. He won’t take from public coffers, he won’t shame his name or family for personal gain.
I think it’s a good idea that Alberta puts high quality, capable people into public office. Regardless of party stripes, regardless of age, sex or race…we need good people to step up and serve our province. I believe Greg Clark is one of those people, and worthy of your vote.
