I’ve been thinking about my focus lately. What I’m spending my time and attention on. When it comes to work, I basically have conversations with people. But not just chit-chatting, say anything you want conversations…these are serious, focused conversations. This requires my attention.
Problem solving and solutioning isn’t a ‘shiny object’ sort of thing. This is the big leagues and I need to work hard to bring my A-game to every conversation. I’m working with Professionals and they expect quality, timeliness and clarity in each interaction we have.
Attention is an interesting thing, don’t you think? Like time and money, it’s clear we have only so much of it. Or perhaps more accurately, we all have a finite capacity for our attention…we can only focus effectively on so many things.
As we venture into 2015, and some rather ‘uncertain’ economic times (in Calgary, at least), I’m stating an intention to focus my attention on the people, topics and companies who want it. Really want it. My bull shit filter will need to be on, as I’ve learned (the hard way) that many people are happy to have me spend my time and attention on matters for which they aren’t dedicating the same level of focus or care. That’s what I hope to do differently…focus on the matters where all the relevant parties have made a mutual commitment to focus our attention on a goal.
If we are clear on our purpose, and direct our attention to the matters standing between us and the goal, I know positive results will follow. It’s always been that way for me.
In focusing my attention, and ensuring I’m aligned with my counter-parties’ intention, I think I’ll be more effective, less cluttered and frankly, bring a higher level of quality to each interaction.
Does this make sense? What can you do to focus your attention in the coming year?
Would you like my attention in 2015?
